Several months ago during my first semester at Georgia Tech. I was wading through the daily flood of emails, when I saw a peculiar heading:"TOWNHALL MEETING- College of Computing."
Not sure why this particular email caught my attention, but whatever the reason, I decided to read more. Apparently, there was a gathering for undergraduate CS majors to discuss concerns and suggestions. Luckily, I had 20 minutes to walk across campus and make the meeting.
Arriving at the Klaus building, I saw several students who I had seen featured on promotional material. I told myself I would meet them and soon be involved in the College of Computing.
To be blunt, I was a little disappointed when I walked into the designated room to see that there were more organizers than actual participants. About four students made an appearance as five others discussed the agenda as though they were talking to a crowd of hundreds. The silent replies to request for audience feedback seemed to be the only indication to them of a mediocre turn out.
After the general topics were discussed, one of the organizers mentioned a new student produced newspaper for the College of Computing was being started. Slightly interested in the idea, but more interested in getting to know these active students. I immediately volunteered to help, and asked them if they had a web developer....they didn't.
After the meeting, I talked to Mansi Sharma and Ajai K about the FIREWALL. We decided to head to dinner at a local cafe. Two hours after planning to meet active students and become more involved, I was hobnobbing with some of the most respected student leaders in my department.
