Standards Compliance

If you are in the web design world, no doubt, you've heard about standards compliance. (just skip the intro). If you are new to this phrase you might be wondering what I mean.

    INTRO

  • Essentially, when there is an industry where many people(entities) are creating similar products, there needs to be some measure of universal quality control, some standard that optimizes the products for a wide array of consumers.

The w3c or World Wide Web Consortium is a non profit organization that endeavors to improve the Internet, by setting standards for coding languages used to create websites and other web applications. They have developed standards that make the internet more user friendlily and more accessible to people world wide

    • So since these standards are in place, you would expects everybody to follow them right...

The reality is many beneficial sites like google.com for example are not fully complaint. There are also many terrible sites that are fully complaint, there are great sites that are completely standard complaint as well ..yadda yadda yadda

From by own experiences,I believe web developers should do their best to comply with the standards set by the w3c.

However, sometimes these standards do not always keep up with advancing technology, or they don't support certain features that work in some web browsers and not others. (Which is understandable since the standards are meant to be universal).

Personally, I believe as long as a website is designed on sound principles and doesn't deviate from standards.. other than for the sole purpose of enhancing the overall user experience for a targeted audience, the site is valid by my standards.

By the way Jovial Designs is xhtml stirct 1.0 valid, but some of the css code that enables some nice features without compromising accessibility are not. I guess I have failed..
